Chimborazo, the highest peak in Ecuador. Its location on the equatorial bulge makes its summit the farthest point on the earth’s surface from its centre. The mountain was first explored by Alexander von Humboldt in 1802, but it was not until 1880 that Edward Whymper achieved its summit. Chimborazo is covered by snow all year long; in fact, a tradition of the nearby indigenous communities is to bring down ice from the glaciers of the mountain to prepare their drinks.
